Work and Skills 2025
More than half of the workplaces can already automate about 1/3 of the tasks. This means that we will be doing more and more difficult but also more exciting work in the future.
One of the most important keywords for future work is undoubtedly flexibility. The share of project-based and freelance work will increase significantly, which means that a person's career will be formed in the future from many part-time tasks that require somewhat different skills than today.
An ideal future employee has in-depth knowledge of at least one area and the ability to understand and connect different areas and the people involved. In addition to mastering one's profession, a future employee is expected to have a significantly better command of "soft skills", such as communication skills, perception of and adaptation to different cultures, and so on. The key skills for future work are social intelligence, creative and critical thinking, and good cooperation.
Learning and mindset take place throughout life. Acquiring a specialty or an academic degree will no longer be the person's last contact with school - in-service training and retraining will play a much bigger role.
Thus, it is at least as important with the choice of specialty that schooling is given a strong foundation to be supplemented in everyday life and work. In the context of a changing economy, it is quite unlikely that a person will work in the chosen profession for the rest of his or her working life. Therefore, it is very important that what you learn at school provides a broad enough base to be able to work successfully in many disciplines in the future.
The collection “Work and Skills 2025” compiled by Ott Pärn deals with future trends affecting employment in the world and analyzes their impact on the Estonian labor market. The overview has been compiled on the basis of discussions conducted by the Professional Chamber of Future Monitoring Experts and think tanks.
